If you love wine, you’ve probably had at least one memorably bad wine experience in a restaurant. The reasons for poor wine service are, by now, painfully well known to most—unknowledgeable staff, a wine list that’s an afterthought, high price mark-ups, and other offenses. And, while bashing restaurant wine service seems to be in vogue, I’d like to switch it up and shine a floodlight on three restaurants that are getting it right. Read More...

Michael Chiarello is back where he loves to be-behind the stove-at his new Restaurant, Bottega. The cookbook author, vintner and Food Network celebrity, who describes the restaurant as his new studio, is picking up where he left off 10 years ago at Tra Vigne, exploring regional italian themes with a California twist. You'll find a few carryovers from Tra Vigne, such as whole oven-roasted fish, wood-grilled octopus, polenta with caramelized wild mushrooms, garganelli with balsamic rabbit sugo and chanterelles, and a daily mix of the other pastas and gnocchi. "When you're on TV, you never get to see the light smiling in people's eyes when they eat," says Michael Chiarello. And that's why the Emmy-winning host for Food Network's "Easy Entertaining" has gotten back into the heat of the kitchen, opening Bottega restaurant in the Napa Valley (Yountville) in December 2008. A pitch-perfect mix of wineries, restaurants, and decidedly sybaritic hotels makes this the ultimate wine-lover's escape. But the best part: there's always something new to discover in the valley. This past fall, celebrity chef Michael Chiarello launched Bottega Napa Valley. Download the full article

Just down the road from Ma(i)sonry and tucked behind Yountville's historic V Marketplace is the new NapaStyle, in a soaring space formerly occupied by stables. The shop is stocked with kitchen and tabletop accessories, furniture, gifts, wine and food stuffs, and all hand selected-and exuberantly described in accompanying signage-by the telegenic Emmy Award-winning chef and author Michael Chiarello. If you scripted a wine-country soap opera, Michael Chiarello could play McSteamy and his new restaurant could serve as the set. Against the backdrop of a modernized "farm house", the Food Network star caters to a crowd worthy of central casting: gentleman vintners, clinky-drink cougars, and cabernet princes armed with Daddy's credit card. Yountville has often been compared to a European village because of its charm and because everything in town is within walking distance. That may be an apt description, yet, in how many European villages will you find yourself within a short stroll of half a dozen restaurants in the country? Download the full article

Bottega, which translates as “artist's workshop,” is justly named. With a bounty of artisan and house-made ingredients — cheeses, salumi, pastas and cured olives — it offers one of the most original menus in the valley, with dishes like Warm Pecorina Cheese Pudding with Wood-Roasted Rapini, House-Made Veal Tortelli in Brodo de Carne, and Garganelli with Balsamic Rabbit Sugo. Bottega strikes a fine balance of rustic refinement. Its open kitchen where the genial Chiarello can be seen cooking along with his crew reinforces the notion that here artists are at work. After being away from the intense heat and pressure of a restaurant kitchen for nearly a decade, Michael Chiarello is back fanning the flames at his new restaurant, Bottega, in Yountville. Read More

Michael Chiarello, the Food Network personality and former chef-partner of St. Helena's Tra Vigne, is back behind the stoves in Napa Valley after a decade-long absence. His new 90-seat restaurant, Bottega, in Yountville's V Marketplace (formerly Vintage 1870), was given a face-lift by local architect Michael Guthrie. The old fir floors, timber beams and brick walls remain, but Italy inspired almost everything else, from the Venetian plaster walls and Murano glass chandeliers to the Frette linens. Read More

Yountville: The plywood is down, the orange awnings up, and a formal opening date set for Bottega and the return of Michael Chiarello. It's not everyday that a new restaurant opens in Yountville, let alone one by a local celebrity chef, but Bottega has declared this Friday, December 5th to be that day. Read More

Dined at Bottega in Yountville last night, and if the food, vibe and patronage are signs of things to come, Michael Chiarello has a sure winner on his hands. Located in the historic V Marketplace (formerly Vintage 1870 and historically known as the Groezinger Winery), Bottega is the largest restaurant in the Napa Valley, seating, I believe, 160, and, along with the flagship NapaStyle store located nearby, has become the lynchpin in the up-scaling of Yountville's premiere tourist complex.
